I can tell you the point of exercise (for me, at least) is not:
The point for me, and for most of you, is to be able to do my regular life without pain. Today and for many, many years to come, I want to be able to pick up my daughter without low-back pain. I want to be able to work with power tools without shoulder pain. I want to wake up in the morning with more energy because I haven’t been tossing and turning all night.
Are there often aesthetic benefits, too? Yeah. I’d be lying if I said I was mad about those. But that’s not the POINT.
Exercise, for me, is never the goal. LIFE is the goal and exercise is the tool. What we do in training is gradually and systematically increase our capacity (muscular strength, flexibility, cardiovascular stamina, etc.). It takes careful planning and constant feedback to create a program that allows you to continue to increase your capacity without injury or pain.
Simply showing up to group workouts isn’t enough. (It’s an incredible start, and kudos to those who do, but it’s not a plan in itself.) Simply following a plan you found online isn’t enough.
